My name is Lavonne Weller, and I am the owner and artist at HeyCrow Studios. Welcome!
At this time, I am not selling online, but if you are local to Spokane, please come see me at
the 33 Artists Market held at The Woman’s Club of Spokane on March 29th, 2025 from 11-5.
I came to clay rather late—I attended my first class directly after I retired in 2018. I had explored a wide variety of creative outlets throughout the years, but I truly found my happy place in clay.
I am a ceramic hand-builder; that is, I make ceramic pieces by utilizing slab building, coil work, pinching, and sculpting without the use of a pottery wheel. This approach to ceramic art allows me to let my mind wander where it will as I explore different ideas, shapes, and textures. My work tends to focus on themes of nature: animals, plants, birds, as well as nature elementals such as earth, fire, air, and water. I often lean toward the whimsical, but my hope is even my more serious pieces offer a sense of joy and calm.
I have always been fascinated by birds, especially corvids. I’ve read the stories about people who have befriended crows and ravens, but I had zero luck in making any feathered friends of my own until six or seven years ago when I saw a crow on the street in front of my house. He was dismantling a thrown-away McDonalds bag someone had apparently tossed out of their car window. I happened to have some unsalted shelled peanuts, so I carefully and calmly stepped out of my front door and tossed a few as far as I could toward him (her? only the crows know for sure), whispering Hey Crow! We soon became good friends, and now I am his faithful servant. He caws loudly outside my window, and I deliver peanuts. He and his partner, Lady, visit most days, and in the spring, they bring their fledglings around to introduce them to me. It feels like a great honor.
